Iceland’s Euro 2016 heroes given brilliant welcome home after quarter-final defeat

THOUSANDS of Icelandic fans lined the streets to give their national team a hero's welcome on their return home after their memorable Euro 2016 campaign.

The minnows went into the competition as the lowest-ranked team in the tournament but overcame a tough group featuring Portugal, Austria and Hungary before famously knocking England out.

They were emphatically beaten by hosts France in the quarter-finals, on Sunday night, but, despite only having a population of 330,000, thousands waited in the capital Reykjavik to welcome them home.

Before arriving back home the team’s plane flew low over the capital before eventually landing at Keflavik airport.

As the plane taxied back towards the terminal it was greeted by two local fire services vehicles and given a guard of honour by blasting water across the runway to create a rainbow.
